MAJOR HYPOCRITE: Grant Stevens “Slams” Suspended Sentence For Woman Who Glassed Cop, Nothing to Say About Cops Who Bash & Murder Civilians

Grant Stevens has once again put his nauseating hypocrisy on full display.

He says the state’s police force was “shocked and bewildered” by a recent District Court decision to spare a woman who glassed an officer in the face from jail, labelling the sentence “totally unacceptable”.

Stevens said SAPOL had contacted the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to seek further advice on the decision – just as SAPOL did with Raina-Jane Cruise, who was originally given a suspended sentence after “scalping” a female cop who unlawfully manhandled her.

The woman at the centre of Stevens’ latest tantrum is Alisha Naomi Renee Gray, 30.

The District Court was told Gray attended the Ceduna Football League grand final at the Far West Aboriginal Sporting Complex on September 7, 2024. She was directed to leave the event about 11pm following an altercation involving her partner and the police.

After getting into a vehicle to wait, Gray’s partner approached a male police officer aggressively and he was restrained.

The court heard SAPOL’s method of restraining Gray’s partner involved punching him in the head multiple times.

Distressed at what she saw, Gray exited the vehicle holding a glass bottle and used it to strike a female police officer who was proceeding to join the officers who had “restrained” her husband.

Gray, of Ceduna, pleaded guilty to one count of causing harm to a prescribed emergency worker with intent.

The court heard Gray was a mother of four, with two children having special needs.

Judge Anne Barnett sentenced Gray to one year and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of one year.

“Whilst there may be complex relationships between police and Indigenous Australians in your community, everyone has a right to feel safe at work and assaults on police officers are extremely serious,” she said.

However, due to Gray’s lack of criminal history, remorse and young family, the sentence was suspended on an 18-month good behaviour bond.

Stevens Has a Cry About It

Stevens said there was a 15-year maximum sentence for assaulting a police officer, but there was a “chasm between the sentence handed down, regardless of the severity of the offending”.

“How severe does an assault on a police officer have to be before a custodial sentence, closer to the legislated maximum sentence, is imposed?” he said.

Civilians who watched the 2017 video of Senior Constable Benjamin Higgins slamming a handcuffed Nathan Cross head-first into a counter – a deranged act that could easily have proven fatal – wondered the exact same thing, but vice versa:

“How severe does an assault by a police officer have to be before a custodial sentence is imposed?”

Stevens said “Every case should be decided on its merits and not every person who assaults a police officer should go to jail – but there are many examples of offenders who clearly should have received a custodial sentence have not.”

Stevens deliberately fails to mention that there are many examples of SAPOL officers behaving like violent thug scum and getting off scot-free. Not only has Gutless Grant done nothing about it, in one instance he actually praised the officers involved!

Among the uniformed criminals that Stevens has publicly defended during his shameful tenure is the abovementioned Benjamin Higgins, a serial thug who delights in violently attacking handcuffed people. Higgins is the psychopath who in February 2017 violently rammed a man’s head into a police station counter, knocking him out cold and leaving him with lasting brain injury.

The man, Nathan Cross, was handcuffed and fully restrained at the time of Higgins’ cowardly attack. He posed no threat to Higgins or any other persons present. Higgins simply became enraged because a drunk Cross was verbally expressing his displeasure at what was transpiring.

No disciplinary action was taken against Higgins.

In 2023, Cross told the ABC the lasting brain damage he suffered from Higgins’ brutal and totally unwarranted assault has left him unable to work. Cross said he struggles to remember simple things, has lost his “organization skills”. and is often afraid to leave his home.

Cross said the trial took a toll on his mental and physical health. The “stress was unbelievable. I don’t sleep much, I don’t go to bed ’til like three o’clock in the morning now.”

The assault “affected almost everything in my life, my relationship with my kids, my families.”

SAPOL did not charge Higgins with assault – instead they charged Cross! Despite the magistrate rejecting the police testimony, finding all but one of the officers “were not candid, unreliable or misleading in their evidence” (in other words, a bunch of liars), the corrupt DPP found criminal charges against them “were not warranted”.

So in South Australia, police officers can use ridiculously excessive force on a fully restrained, handcuffed person who poses no threat to them, cause them lasting brain damage – and get off with absolutely no consequences.

But when the public realizes the system is stacked against them and starts fighting back, and the courts give them suspended sentences (still more than what violent SAPOL cops get), Stevens spits the dummy, takes a shit in his diapers, and starts jumping up and down about the injustice of it all.

What a toss.

As a result of this double standard, cops have become a law unto themselves.

In 2019, Higgins was at it again, this time sucker-punching a handcuffed Clarence Yates who was allegedly caught doing graffiti. Higgins and SAPOL claimed Yates spat at the officer, but they were lying, as usual. Footage of the incident clearly shows Yates spitting away from Higgins onto the ground.

As expected, Higgins was cleared of any wrongdoing by his fellow criminals at SAPOL, and the violent liar was praised by Stevens.

My officers should not tolerate being assaulted and I expect them to take reasonable action to protect themselves so they can go home unharmed to their families,” said Stevens of the incident in which no police officer was assaulted.

“That means they’re allowed to use reasonable force, and it means people are going to get hurt if they try to assault a police officer,” he added, despite the footage showing Yates was not trying to hurt anyone.

“I fully support the professional way they deal with those in the community who think it’s OK to threaten or assault police”, Stevens said of the highly unprofessional and violent Higgins.

Stevens, a gutless coward who needs over a dozen officers to accompany him to court because he is shit-scared of peaceful protestors, was not just talking like a macho bully. He was publicly giving a green light for his officers to engage in gratuitous violence, safe in the knowledge that even when they get caught on camera, SAPOL would downplay and dismiss the incident.

A large contingent of cops from the supposedly ‘under-resourced’ SAPOL stand idly outside court while their boss with plenty to hide, Grant Stevens, appears inside.

In 2020, cops violently assaulted a man in a CBD alleyway. When footage of the incident emerged, the cops absurdly claimed they bashed the man because he “threatened to spit on them”, despite no person ever in the history of the world saying “I will spit on you if you don’t leave me alone.”

Also in 2020, a scooter rider required medical treatment after he was violently tackled by deranged SAPOL goons for … not wearing a helmet. What better way to ensure scooter riders don’t sustain head injuries than throwing them onto a concrete footpath?

Three gutless disgusting SAPOL thugs cost taxpayers $426,000 in damages after gang-attacking a Murray Bridge man in 2018. The man, who was quietly walking home alone and doing nothing wrong, required surgery as a result of injuries sustained during the vicious coward attack. SAPOL refused to divulge whether any of the thugs had been disciplined, which we can safely assume to mean “no”.

A violent 2021 arrest of a Parafield Gardens drug dealer was so unprofessional (even his dog was pepper-sprayed) that taxpayers were again forced to cough up a chunk of hush money to settle the manner. The man originally sued for $500,000 – the amount he received is not known.

In 2023, two SAPOL thugs showed up at a care facility and violently assaulted, tasered, pepper-sprayed and dragged a 61-year-old Huntington’s patient. Despite their brutality, SAPOL refused to charge the officers.

In December 2023, SAPOL thug Aiden Allt, who pepper sprayed and violently bashed a fully restrained man, was given a free pass by corrupt magistrate Roderick Jensen in what was obviously a predetermined decision.

A cop who got in an innocent man’s personal space last November, violently threw him against a wall, then dragged him along a footpath out to the street to arrest him on bullshit charges was cleared of wrongdoing by SAPOL and its accomplices at the pretend watchdog agency that is the Office of Public Integrity.

In June 2025, Guarav Kundi was set upon by violent SAPOL thugs. Pleas by his distressed wife that he had done nothing wrong fell on deaf ears as the cops manhandled him, kicked him and forced him to the ground. The father-of-two died a fortnight later in hospital after his life support was turned off. The incident has since been hushed over, with the help of local media.

This is just a small sampling of the green-lighted brutality committed by SAPOL thugs, but the message is clear: SAPOL thugs can assault civilians with impunity.

Yet Stevens whinges that “rolling crime statistics revealed that assaults against police have increased 21 per cent.”

If cops want respect from the public, they should learn to give it in the first instance. Acting like brown shirt scum is not necessary to uphold the law. It is just gratuitous thuggery. It’s a bit precious to stomp around assaulting unarmed civilians, then cry and moan and act like victims when civilians start to fight back.
